My friend, Eddy called today with news of sweet improbability. A sparrow had landed on his shoulder, then hopped to his finger. Eddy wondered if this might be a sign
from God, though he couldn’t guess for what.
When the sparrow flew off he went back in the house, thinking the seeds he put out for the little birds had been depleted. He returned with a refill. The sparrow returned as well, this time flying to his wrist.
That was today. Tomorrow, who knows?
I think I know.
Eddy and his lady-friend, Miss Terry have fashioned their backyard into a sanctuary for small creatures of all sorts. In the summer luxuriant shrubs and flowers transform their small city backyard into a miniature Eden, replete with birdbaths, feeding stations, and shelters.
The shelters and feeding stations are open all year.
It’s very pleasant. I imagine most of those who visit never wander too far away.
Current visitors/residents include nearly every
type of bird that lives in northern Ohio, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, occasional stray cats, raccoons, skunks, and possums. They are all welcomed into the Peaceable Kingdom.
Several cats have decided to extend that welcome
by forsaking their wild ways and moving inside the house to join the kitties already there.
I believe the current domestic kitty-count is six,
all living peaceably alongside two or three aquariums filled with fish. Peaceability reigns both inside and out.
There is no violence in the Garden. There aren’t even any arguments. Everybody gets along. The two regular tomcat guests are content to dine quietly showing no interest in chasing either bird or chipmunk.
Wouldn’t it be nice if it was like that everywhere.
It is like that in some other places.
More than a few folks operate their own Peaceable Kingdoms, including me. I think more folks should do the same. There is something about courteous generosity that seems to calm the soul of both guest and host alike.
Why, hello there. Will you sit awhile?
can I get you something to eat?
It’s as easy as that.
